Ukraine has increased gas imports tenfold to 1.1 bcm since the beginning of the year

As of May 5, 2025, Ukraine has imported 1.12 bcm of natural gas since the beginning of the year, according to ExPro data. Compared to the same period in 2024, import volumes have increased nearly tenfold — from 118 mcm last year to 1.12 bcm this year.

Reasons for the import growth

The sharp increase in gas imports in 2025 is linked to the need for additional resources during the 2024–2025 heating season, following damage to domestic production caused by Russian attacks in February. In February alone, gas imports totaled 512 mcm, the highest monthly volume since September 2023. Ukraine has also started preparing for the upcoming heating season by importing gas to build reserves for the winter.

Most gas imports came from Hungary, totaling 669 mcm or nearly 60% of all imports. Additionally, 261 mcm (23%) were imported from Slovakia, and 190 mcm (17%) from Poland.

Natural gas imports to Ukraine in 2025

Who imports gas to Ukraine?

According to ExPro, the main importer was Naftogaz Group, which accounted for nearly 900 mcm, or 80% of total imports. Some private companies also imported gas for resale through auctions organized by Ukrtransgaz on the Ukrainian Energy Exchange.

It is worth noting that Naftogaz of Ukraine has been the sole importer of natural gas in April and May. As reported in ExPro Gas&Oil Weekly, the company plans to import more than 400 mcm of natural gas from Hungary and Poland during May 2025.
