Natural gas imports in February rose to a 1.5-year high of 512 mcm
In February 2025, Ukraine imported 511.8 mcm of natural gas, the highest monthly volume in 1.5 years, since September 2023, according to ExPro data. Compared to January 2025, gas imports increased 12 times.
Where did Ukraine import gas from in February?
Most of the gas was imported from Slovakia—234.4 mcm, or 45.8% of all imports. In addition, 218 mcm (42.6%) were imported from Hungary and 59.5 mcm (11.6%) from Poland.
Most of the natural gas was imported to the “customs warehouse” of the Ukrainian UGS facilities - 401 mcm, of which 188.1 mcm were imported via short-haul service. In addition, 110.8 mcm were imported directly into the Ukrainian gas transmission system.

Why did Ukraine increase gas imports?
The significant increase in natural gas imports in February was due to several factors, the main one being the decline in Ukrainian production following the Russian attacks at the beginning of the month. During the month, Russia repeatedly attacked gas production facilities, which led to a reduction in production. In addition, cold weather persisted in Ukraine in February, which resulted in higher demand for natural gas. With lower gas reserves in storage, Ukraine needed to import natural gas to cover its needs. The main importer of gas was the Naftogaz Group, as well as private companies that imported gas for Ukrtransgaz.
It is expected that imports in March may be lower than in February. In early March, Ukraine is expected to experience gradual warming, which will lead to a reduction in natural gas consumption. In addition, Ukraine is gradually restoring gas production facilities after the Russian attacks.
It is worth noting that in preparation for the next heating season, Ukraine needs to significantly increase the volume of natural gas imports. For example, according to DTEK CEO Maxim Timchenko, imports should amount to 1-2 bcm.
