In mid-May, it became known that the transition to 15-minute intervals in the pan-European electricity Day-Ahead Market (Single Day-Ahead Market, SDAC), scheduled for June, was postponed to the end of September 2025.
"Due to the technical non-readiness of some parties, the parties announce the postponement of the commissioning of the 15-Minute Market Time Unit (MTU) project to SDAC by September 30, 2025, the first trading date, with a delivery date on October 1, 2025," the NEMO Committee stated.
Earlier, the project was scheduled to launch on June 11, 2025. Currently, the interval on the European Single Day-Ahead Market is 1 hour.
Nominated European Market Operators (NEMO) and Transmission System Operators (TSO) have confirmed the successful completion of joint system performance tests and procedural tests.
Most of the project parties would be technically ready by June.
In September last year, ACER (Agency for Cooperation of Energy Regulators of the European Union) made changes to the methodology of a single connection of EU electricity Day-Ahead Markets, which concerned providing 15-minute intervals during trading (15-Minute Market Time Unit (MTU).
The NEMO Committee calls the following advantages of switching to a new trading mode:
- Improved integration of renewable energy sources into short-term market segments.
- Better system balancing and supply and demand forecasting.
- Improving market efficiency.
What is SDAC?
SDAC (Single Day-Ahead Market) is a common European electricity Day-Ahead Market. Its essence is that limited cross-border transmission capacities are distributed most efficiently, combining wholesale electricity markets from different regions using a common algorithm, considering restrictions. The main reason for the unification is to optimise cross-border flows and simplify trade in spot market segments.
The SDAC objective is to create a single pan-European Interzonal Day-Ahead Electricity Market.
An integrated Day-Ahead Market improves overall trading efficiency by promoting efficient competition, increasing liquidity, and ensuring more efficient use of energy across Europe.
The following entities participate in SDAC:
Transmission System Operators (TSOs): 50Hertz Transmission, ADMIE, Amprion, APG, AST, ČEPS, Creos, EirGrid, Elering, ELES, ELIA, Energinet, ESO, Fingrid, HOPS, Litgrid, MAVIR, PSE, REE, REN, RTE, SEPS, SONI, Statnett, Svenska Kraftnät, TenneT DE, TenneT NL, Terna, Transelectrica, and TransnetBW.
Nominated Electricity Market Operators (NEMOs): BRM, BSP, CROPEX, SEMOpx (EirGrid and SONI), EPEX, EXAA, GME, HEnEx, HUPX, IBEX, Nord Pool, OMIE, OKTE, OPCOM, OTE, and TGE.
