Poland and Ukraine increase gas import capacities to Ukraine

Poland’s gas transmission system operator Gaz-System and the GTS Operator of Ukraine have agreed to increase capacities for importing natural gas to Ukraine starting from early February 2026. Gaz-System reported this, ExPro says.

It is noted that from early February to the end of April, import capacity from Poland to Ukraine will increase from 600 to 720 thousand cubic meters per hour (at 0°C). At the same time, gas in Ukraine is measured under standard conditions at 20°C, therefore the capacity will increase from 637 to 765 thousand cubic meters per hour, or from 15.3 to 18.4 mcm per day.

The expansion of available import capacities became possible following the completion of modernization works at the Hermanowice gas metering station.

“This also confirms Poland’s role as a country transporting gas for the Central and Eastern Europe region,” Gaz-System said.

Imports from Poland

Over the past year, the Polish route has remained one of the most important directions for Ukraine’s natural gas imports. In 2025, Poland’s share in the total structure of gas supplies to Ukraine exceeded 30%, with 2.1 bcm of gas imported from Poland, according to ExPro data. This included about 600 mcm of U.S. LNG delivered to Ukraine via Poland in 2025.

Already in January 2026, gas import volumes from Poland to Ukraine increased, averaging 11.6 mcm per day, accounting for more than half of total gas imports to Ukraine. Poland, together with Hungary, provides the bulk of natural gas imports to Ukraine, as tariffs on these routes are lower compared with Slovakia or the Southern route via the Trans-Balkan corridor.
