Naftogaz books LNG regasification capacity independently for the first time

Naftogaz Group has for the first time secured long-term LNG regasification capacity at the Klaipėda LNG terminal in Lithuania, according to terminal operator KN Energies and Naftogaz.

The company booked regasification capacity for the period from 2033 to 2044 through the terminal’s long-term capacity allocation procedure, which was successfully completed by KN Energies.

Five companies secured regasification capacity at the Lithuanian LNG terminal: Lithuania’s Ignitis, Latvia’s Latvenergo, Norway’s Equinor, as well as two new terminal customers — Finland’s Gasum and Ukraine’s Naftogaz.

In total, customers booked 20 TWh (1.9 bcm) of the 28 TWh (2.64 bcm) of capacity offered. Of this volume, 8 TWh (755 mcm) was allocated until 2040, while a further 12 TWh (1.13 bcm) was booked until 2044.

“For Ukraine, this is an important step toward diversifying gas supply sources and routes. Previously, similar operations were carried out in partnership with other companies. Such decisions are strategically important for Ukraine’s energy security, expand our access to the global LNG market, and strengthen the long-term resilience of gas supply,” said Sergii Koretskyi, CEO of Naftogaz.

As ExPro previously reported, Ukrainian Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko said in early June that Ukraine had reached an agreement on long-term LNG supplies via Klaipėda.

Klaipėda LNG

The Klaipėda LNG terminal in Lithuania is a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU), Independence, which commenced operations in late 2014, with commercial activities starting in early 2015. The project provided the Baltic states with an alternative to Russian pipeline gas and has become one of the region’s key energy security assets.

The terminal has a nominal regasification capacity of approximately 2.8 bcm per year, exceeding Lithuania’s annual gas demand. It can receive LNG cargoes from suppliers worldwide, including the United States, Norway and other countries. In late 2024, Lithuania completed the acquisition of the FSRU Independence from Höegh LNG, securing the terminal’s operation at least until 2044. The project is operated by KN Energies.

As previously reported by ExPro, Ukrainian companies Naftogaz and DTEK have received U.S. LNG supplies via the Klaipėda LNG terminal.
