Ukraine injected 258 mcm of gas into underground storage in April
In April 2025, Ukraine injected 258 mcm of natural gas into its underground gas storages (UGS), according to ExPro estimates.
As previously reported, Ukraine began gas injection on April 17, 2025, starting with 2.1 mcm. Injection volumes steadily increased throughout the month, reaching 35 mcm on April 30, the highest daily volume recorded since the beginning of this year’s injection season.

Compared to April 2024, gas injection volumes decreased by 44%, falling from 460 mcm last year to 258 mcm this April. The decline is primarily due to a later start to the injection season this year (April 17), whereas in 2024, injections began on March 31.
UGS reserves
As of early May, Ukraine’s UGS facilities held 5.7 bcm of natural gas, with storage facilities filled to 18.4% of capacity. This represents a 33% (or 2.86 bcm) decrease compared to the same period last year. Active gas reserves stood at over 960 mcm as of May 1, 2025.
Import Requirements
Ukraine needs to significantly increase its natural gas imports to prepare for the upcoming heating season. As a reminder, at the start of last year's withdrawal season (November 1), gas reserves in Ukrainian storage stood at 12.92 bcm. To reach a similar level by this November, the country must inject 7.2 bcm of gas during the May–October period. Part of this volume will be covered by domestic production, which remains constrained following heavy Russian missile attacks in February and March. The remaining volume, estimated at 3 to 5 bcm, will need to be imported.
