Ukraine accumulates 10 bcm of gas in underground storages
Natural gas reserves in Ukraine’s underground gas storage facilities (UGS) exceeded 10 bcm as of August 5, according to ExPro. The storage is now 32.3% full.
This year’s reserves remain the lowest in at least 12 years, but the gap versus last year is narrowing. For the first time since the start of the year, the gap dropped below 10%. As of now, there is 9% or 990 mcm less gas in storage than at the same time last year.
As reported by ExPro, gas reserves in Ukrainian UGS exceeded 9 bcm on July 17.

Gas injections
Gas injection volumes remain significantly higher than last year. In July 2025, 1.69 bcm of gas was injected into Ukrainian UGS, 1.9 times more than in July 2024, and the highest monthly injection since July 2023.
At the beginning of August, daily injection volumes remain around 50 mcm, 1.8 times more than in early August 2024. Since the beginning of the current injection season (April 17), nearly 4.65 bcm of gas has been injected into UGS, 1.6 times more than last year.
Gas import
The increase in injection volumes is primarily driven by higher gas imports. In July, imports rose to 833 mcm, the highest monthly volume in nearly two years. Although August imports declined by 26%, they still exceed 20 mcm per day. As in July, Naftogaz of Ukraine remains the main importer.
How much gas is needed?
To reach 13.2 bcm in UGS by November 1, Ukraine needs to inject about 3.2 bcm more during August-October. A portion of this can be covered by domestic production. In addition, Ukraine needs to import about 1.7 bcm during August-October, a realistic target given current import volumes.
