Natural gas imports to Ukraine collapse 28-fold in April to 29 mcm
Ukraine imported 29 mcm of natural gas in April 2026, 28 times less than in March 2026 (789 mcm) and 8 times less than in April 2025 (219 mcm), according to ExPro calculations. This is also the lowest monthly import volume since December 2024.
Reasons behind lower imports
The sharp decline in imports was caused by high natural gas prices in Europe, which throughout March remained above prices in Ukraine. On average, gas in Europe (TTF) traded €9/MWh higher than on the Ukrainian market in March.
Gas prices in Europe increased following the outbreak of war in the Middle East, which disrupted LNG supplies from Qatar and the UAE. Given relatively high gas inventories in Ukrainian underground gas storages, Ukraine can afford to avoid imports for a certain period.
Import structure
In April, almost all gas was imported into the “customs warehouse” regime of Ukrainian UGS facilities from Poland — 23.8 mcm or 83% of total imports. Imports from Poland remained relatively stable throughout the month at 0.8 mcm/d. In addition, between April 16 and April 22, imports from Hungary directly to the Ukrainian gas transmission system totaled 4.8 mcm or 13%.
According to ExPro estimates, natural gas in April could have been imported by both state-owned and private companies, although import volumes remained insignificant compared to previous months. More details on companies importing natural gas are available in ExPro publications available by subscription.
Imports in January-April 2026
In January-April 2026, Ukraine imported 2.21 bcm of natural gas, 2.1 times more than in the corresponding period of 2025. The largest volumes came from Poland — 1.03 bcm (46.8% of total imports), Hungary — 779 mcm (35.3%), Slovakia — 280 mcm (12.7%) and the southern route — 117 mcm (5.2%).
