Meta will finance construction of 7 gas power plants for its largest data center

Meta will finance the construction of seven gas-fired power plants to supply electricity to its largest data center being built in Louisiana. This is reported by Engadget.

The project is implemented in partnership with the energy company Entergy.

The new power plants will provide over 5.2 GW of capacity, which will be directed to power the data center. Taking into account the previously approved construction of three more gas plants with a capacity of 2.3 GW, the total number of facilities will reach 10 power plants, and total capacity will exceed 7 GW.

The data center is part of Meta’s large-scale project worth about $27 billion and will become one of the largest facilities in the world for data processing and artificial intelligence development. In addition to gas generation, the project providesthe construction of about 240 miles of high-voltage transmission lines, energy storage systems, as well as potential investments in renewable and nuclear generation. Meta will cover the full cost of energy supply for the facility.

It is estimated that this will save electricity consumers in the region about $2 billion over 20 years.
