Import capacities from Poland to Ukraine will be unavailable on October 20-23 due to maintenance

From October 20 to 25, 2025, modernization works are planned on the IP “Ukraine-Poland,” which is used for natural gas imports to Ukraine. During the works, access to import capacities at the Polish-Ukrainian border will be limited. The corresponding announcement was published on the website of the Polish TSO Gaz-System, ExPro reports.

Restrictions

The purpose of the works is to improve gas transmission conditions to strengthen Ukraine’s energy security. The schedule and scope of the works were agreed within the framework of constructive technical dialogue between the gas transmission system operators of both countries – the GTS Operator of Ukraine and Gaz-System.

Gaz-System calls on market participants to plan capacity bookings for daily products and make nominations in advance – especially in the days leading up to and following October 20 and October 25, 2025 – to ensure the optimal level of gas transmission to Ukraine.

The physical transmission capacity for natural gas imports from Poland to Ukraine will be:

• From 06:00 UTC October 20 to 06:00 UTC October 23 – 0 kWh/h (0 mcm per day).
• From 06:00 UTC October 23 to 06:00 UTC October 25 – 2 872 025 kWh/h (6.54 mcm per day).

“In case of restrictions caused by planned works at the entry or exit point, users who booked capacity in yearly, quarterly, or monthly products may apply for a discount corresponding to the scope and duration of the restriction, in accordance with the applicable tariff,” Gaz-System reports.

Gas imports to Ukraine

Since the beginning of September, Ukraine has been importing about 10–10.4 mcm of natural gas per day from the Polish direction, according to ExPro monitoring. Poland’s share in the total gas imports to Ukraine exceeds 42%, and the Polish direction in September became the main route for gas imports to Ukraine, primarily due to the import cost, which is one of the lowest.

In total, Ukraine imports about 23.5 mcm of natural gas per day from European countries. Most of the natural gas is imported by the state-owned Naftogaz of Ukraine as part of preparations for the heating season, injecting gas into storage to accumulate at least 13.2 bcm by November 1.
