Gas reserves in Ukrainian UGS exceed 8 bcm
Natural gas reserves in Ukrainian underground gas storage (UGS) facilities exceeded 8 bcm as of June 28, according to ExPro data. The storage facilities are currently 25.9% full.
Compared to the same period last year, gas volumes in storage are 19.6% or 1.95 bcm lower. While this year’s storage level remains the lowest in at least 11 years, the gap with 2024 is narrowing. For the first time this season, the year-on-year deficit dropped below 20%.
As reported by ExPro, gas reserves in Ukrainian UGS exceeded 7 bcm on June 6.

Gas injection
Gas injection volumes remain significantly higher than last year. Since the beginning of June, 1.25 bcm of gas has been injected into Ukrainian UGS, which is 1.8 times more than during the same period last year. Total injection for June is expected to reach nearly 1.34 bcm, the highest monthly volume in the last 20 months, since August 2023.
Since the start of the current injection season on April 17, over 2.6 bcm of gas has been injected into storage, 38% more than in the same period last year, when the season started earlier, on March 31.
The average daily injection rate in June stands at 44.7 mcm, 26% higher than in May. On June 20 alone, 49.3 mcm was injected, the highest daily volume since October 2023.
How much gas is needed?
By the start of the next heating season (November 1), Ukraine needs to accumulate at least 13 bcm of gas in storage. This means around 5 bcm must be injected during July–October. If current injection rates are maintained, this target could be reached slightly ahead of schedule.
Part of the required volume will be covered by domestic production, while the rest will need to be imported. According to ExPro estimates, under a base-case scenario, Ukraine will need to import about 2.4 bcm of gas during July–October.
