Gas imports to Ukraine in August increased to the highest level in three years - 1.09 bcm

During August 2023, Ukraine imported 1.093 bcm of natural gas from European destinations, according to ExPro calculations. Compared to July, gas imports increased by 1.85 times, and compared to August last year, by 9 times. This is also the highest level since September 2020, for the first time in almost three years, imports exceeded 1 bcm.

Most gas in August 2023 were imported from Slovakia - 611 mcm or 56% of all deliveries. Gas imports from Hungary amounted to 216 mcm or 20% of all supplies for the month. In addition, 167 mcm (15%) were imported from Moldova and 99 mcm (9%) from Poland.

The increase in the volume of gas imports to Ukraine relates to the active injection of natural gas into the "customs warehouse" of Ukrainian UGS. Yes, almost all the gas imported in August was injected into storage facilities - more than 99.9%. Only 22 tcm of gas were imported directly to the Ukrainian GTS.

Against the background of the filling of European storage facilities, companies are injecting natural gas into the UGS of Ukraine for its subsequent re-export during the heating season or sale on the domestic market. The main part of the gas was imported by about 10 companies, including several Ukrainian and most foreign companies.

In general, in 8 months of 2023, Ukraine imported 2.9 bcm of natural gas, 3.2 times more than in the same period last year. Since the beginning of September, gas imports have remained at the level of about 30 mcm.
