D.Trading imported U.S. LNG via Lithuania for the first time
D.Trading, the European trading arm of Ukraine’s DTEK Group, imported its first cargo of U.S. LNG via the Lithuanian Klaipeda terminal, the company reported.
The LNG was imported from the Plaquemines plant of U.S. producer Venture Global in Louisiana. The GasLog Houston tanker delivered around 100 mcm of natural gas after regasification to the Klaipeda terminal on the morning of 18 November.
D.Trading was fully responsible for the gas supply, including cargo safety, vessel chartering, and risk hedging.
“For the company to manage this level of complexity is a different ballgame to receiving cargoes on a delivered basis. When you have your ship and control where your cargo goes, that’s the real deal,” said James O’Brien, D.Trading’s head of LNG.
DTEK noted that the natural gas is planned to be imported to Ukraine (via Poland), the Baltic states, and Poland to enhance energy security. The company said it is in talks to import additional U.S. LNG via Lithuania and Greece as Europe aims to gradually phase out Russian gas supplies by the end of 2027.
“From terminals on the Baltic Sea and Mediterranean, we are working with European and U.S. partners to develop cost-effective routes to get more gas flowing into Ukraine and neighbouring countries,” said DTEK CEO Maksym Timchenko.
In addition, D.Trading is importing natural gas to Ukraine from Greece via Route 1 in November. According to ExPro, the company is the largest importer on this route in November, over 12 mcm.
