Ukraine and USA announced a partnership in three projects for the development of SMR

During the COP 29 Conference, Ukraine and the USA announced a partnership in three projects within the framework of the Foundational Infrastructure for the Responsible Use of Small Modular Reactor Technology (FIRST) program. This was announced by the US Deputy Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Bonnie Jenkins and the Minister of Energy of Ukraine Herman Galushchenko.

The collaboration covers three projects

SMR Pilot Plant for Clean Fuel Production in Ukraine (Phase 2): Phase 2 of this project (the first phase of which was announced at COP 27) involves the construction of a pilot plant in Ukraine to demonstrate the production of clean hydrogen and ammonia using a simulation of safe and reliable small modular reactor technology. The project is being implemented by a multinational public-private consortium from Japan, the Republic of Korea, Ukraine and the United States.

Project Phoenix – Ukraine: As part of the expansion of the ongoing Phoenix project in Central and Eastern Europe, this project will facilitate the transition of Ukrainian coal-fired power plants to reliable and safe SMR nuclear power plants using existing infrastructure and retraining of the workforce. The project will conduct a siting study and feasibility study, develop a comprehensive grid integration strategy and provide consulting services on the conversion of coal-fired generation to SMR.

Clean Steel in Ukraine from SMR Roadmap: This project will develop a roadmap and provide technical support for the rehabilitation, modernization and decarbonization of Ukraine's steel industry through SMR.
