UGV will take part in two international studies on carbon dioxide storage

Ukrgazvydobuvannya JSC, which is part of the Naftogaz Group, received two grants for participation in international decarbonization projects, the company's press service reports. The projects will concern the research of opportunities for transportation and storage of carbon dioxide (CO2), including in the western and Black Sea regions of Ukraine, together with foreign partners.

"Ukrgazvydobuvannya within the framework of the energy transition has created and is developing the direction of decarbonization and the study and development of new and/or alternative types of energy. Participation in similar projects will make it possible to deepen our knowledge of the geological disposal of CO2 and gain new professional contacts, which in the future can be used in local projects," emphasized Maksym Vityk, director of exploration and development of UGV.

As part of the first project, Ukrgazvydobuvannya will join a consortium of 47 partners from various European countries, which will explore the possibilities of creating geological storage facilities for the burial of carbon dioxide and its transportation in Europe. The consortium is led by the Norwegian scientific center SINTEF. UGV will work within the Eastern European cluster together with MND Group (Czech Republic) and the Institute of Oil and Gas (Poland), the Czech Geological Survey, and other industrial companies. The project is designed for four years and will be financed by the Horizon Europe fund, with a total grant budget of more than €37 million.

In the second project, UGV specialists together with partners from Romania, Norway, Denmark, Portugal, and other European countries will analyze the possibilities for transporting CO2 in the basins of the North, Baltic, and Black Seas, and the Atlantic coast of Europe. Within the scope of the project, testing of the innovative technology of carbon dioxide burial from specialized ships in sea wells will be carried out. The project will continue during 2023-2025. Participation in the project became possible thanks to the partnership between Ukrgazvydobuvannya and the Norwegian research center NORCE. Grant funds to ensure participation in the project will be allocated to companies by the Clean Energy Transition Partnership (CETPartnership) specialized fund.
