The UK is importing LNG from Australia for the first time since 2016 amid the gas crisis

The UK is about to receive liquefied natural gas (LNG) from far-off Australia for the first time in at least six years amid an energy crisis caused by blackmail by Russia, Europe's once biggest supplier of gas. Bloomberg reports this.

The LNG tanker Attalos is on its way to the UK with cargo that originated at Australia’s North West Shelf project, according to energy intelligence firm Kpler. The vessel will arrive at the Isle of Grain terminal east of London on August 22.

The UK and continental European countries usually import LNG from the US, Qatar, and other countries closer to Europe. Instead, LNG from the Asia-Pacific region is directed to Asia, which is closer.

According to Bloomberg, Australia has not sent a single LNG tanker to Europe since 2016. According to Kpler, the long journey from Australia to Europe involved the ship-to-ship transfer from the Patris tanker to the Attalos tanker in Malaysia.
