The EU will agree to ban the import of Russian LNG - the Minister of Energy of Spain

The Minister of Energy of Spain said that EU countries will most likely agree to ban the import of Russian LNG. "It will still happen sooner or later," said Spanish Energy Minister Teresa Ribera.

Imports of Russian oil and petroleum products are prohibited and pipeline gas supplies are very limited, so Russian LNG imports are in the spotlight, especially in light of the significant increase in supplies from Russia to EU countries.

In March, Ribera sent a letter to LNG importers and major operators in Spain asking them to avoid new contracts for the supply of Russian LNG after the expiration of existing ones. A similar appeal was made earlier by the European Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson.

According to Ribera, all the companies contacted have pledged not to enter into new contracts.

According to Reuters, in 2022, Europe increased LNG imports from Russia from 16 to 22 bcm and generated approximately $14 billion in revenue for Russian companies.
