Shell will develop bio-LNG projects in Europe

Shell plans to develop bio-LNG projects in Europe in the near future. This was announced during the Budapest LNG Summit by Christian Hellinger, LNG Road Europe Manager, Shell.

Thus, according to Hellinger, LNG is the best solution to the issue of energy transition in the coming decades. Moreover, bio-LNG can not only reduce CO2 emissions to zero, but also reduce them to "negative" values. This effect is achieved due to the fact that the production of bio-LNG utilizes the products of the agricultural sector.

Bio-LNG projects may be of interest for the supply of LNG, for example, for trucks to replace diesel fuel. Shell's pilot project on bio-LNG production started this year in Germany. Since the beginning of the year, tey mamaged to reduce CO2 emissions by 115 tons.

Among the problems of bio-LNG, the Shell’s representative highlighted the high initial risks of projects, and therefore such projects would require subsidies from countries in the early stages.
