Romania signs three-year Neptun Deep gas supply contract with Moldova

Romanian OMV Petrom has signed a three-year natural gas supply contract from the Neptun Deep Black Sea project with Moldovan state-owned company Energocom, according to Romania’s Ministry of Energy.

The signed agreement provides for gas supplies over three years to a Virtual Trading Point (VTP) in Romania, with Moldova as the final destination. The supply volumes have not yet been specified. Gas will be sourced from the offshore Neptun Deep field, whose reserves are estimated at over 100 bcm.

“We are supporting the Republic of Moldova with gas, stability, predictability, and a shared vision. Through these gas deliveries to Moldova, Romania reaffirms its role as a guarantor of regional energy security,” said Sebastian Burduja, Romania's Minister of Energy.

Commercial production from the Neptun Deep field is expected to commence in 2027. “Neptun Deep will allow Romania to strengthen its position as the largest natural gas producer in the European Union, significantly contributing to national and European energy independence,” the ministry said in a statement.

Earlier this year, Moldova ceased receiving natural gas from Russia following the expiration of the transit contract through Ukraine. Russian gas had primarily been delivered to the unrecognized region of Transnistria, totaling around 5.7 mcm per day in 2024.

According to ExPro data, Moldova currently imports about 2.6 mcm per day of natural gas, including 1.6 mcm per day from Romania and 1 mcm per day from Hungary via Ukraine’s gas transmission system.
