Polish Orlen will demand compensation from Russia for stopping gas and oil supplies

Polish company PKN Orlen intends to demand compensation after the suspension of natural gas and oil supplies. This was announced by the company's general director, Daniel Obaitek.

"The Russians have stopped pumping oil to Poland... so we will now file a lawsuit," Obaitek told Radio Zet. He declined to say the amount of the potential compensation, citing confidentiality.

One may remind that on February 25, oil deliveries through the Druzhba oil pipeline from Russia to Poland stopped. Polish Orlen had a contract with Russian Tatneft, the term of which expires in 2024. Nevertheless, Poland decided to replace Russian oil with other sources after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

As ExPro reported, the German RWE and Uniper, the French Engie, and the Czech ČEZ have already applied to international arbitration with demands regarding the undersupply of gas to Gazprom. Moldova was also preparing a lawsuit against Gazprom's decision to cut gas supplies to the country. In November 2022, the Stockholm arbitration found Gazprom's demands to pay for gas in rubles illegal, following a lawsuit from Finland's Gasum.

In September 2022, Naftogaz also officially started a new arbitration against Gazprom for incomplete payment for Russian gas transit services through Ukraine.
