NEURC approves joint product for gas imports via the Vertical corridor

The National Energy and Utilities Regulatory Commission of Ukraine (NEURC) has approved a decision to authorize Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine (GTSOU) to offer a joint transportation service product in cooperation with the gas transmission system operators of the Republic of Bulgaria (Bulgartransgaz), the Hellenic Republic (DESFA SA), the Republic of Moldova (VestMoldTransgaz SRL), and Romania (Transgaz SA).

“The gas transmission system of Ukraine, as well as our underground gas storage facilities, which are part of this route, can play a key role in enhancing the energy security of the entire region. Therefore, we look forward to positive decisions from all participating countries regarding the use of the Trans-Balkan route for our shared strategic goals,” said Ukraine’s Minister of Energy Herman Halushchenko.

The gas will be transported through the so-called Vertical corridor. This initiative, launched by European gas transmission operators, aims to boost gas transportation volumes from South to North, particularly from Greece to Ukraine.

“We are grateful to the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine for supporting this important initiative, developed jointly with other GTS operators as part of the Vertical Corridor, and to NEURC for its prompt decision,” said Vladyslav Medvediev, Acting CEO of GTSOU.

The decision provides for the organization of a single auction for capacity allocation at all points along the Trans-Balkan Corridor on the Greece–Ukraine gas transport route, with a planned volume of approximately 3 mcm per day.

The establishment of this joint product will also require similar decisions from energy regulators in the other participating countries.

“This step will enhance the attractiveness of Ukraine’s natural gas market and expand diversification opportunities for gas supply sources. In turn, it will strengthen regional energy security amid the ongoing armed aggression by the Russian Federation,” NEURC stated.
