Natural gas imports to Ukraine exceeded 500 mcm in July

Since the beginning of the month, as of July 28, 2023, 510 mcm of natural gas have been imported into Ukraine, according to ExPro calculations. This is the highest monthly level since September 2021.

The most gas in July 2023 were imported from Hungary - 200.3 mcm or 39% of all supplies. Gas imports from Moldova amounted to 129.1 mcm or 25% of all supplies for the month. In addition, 90.5 mcm (18%) were imported from Poland and 90.3 mcm (18%) from Slovakia.

Almost all the gas imported in July is injected into the "customs warehouse" of the Ukrainian UGS. Since the beginning of the month, 507 mcm of imported gas have been injected into the "customs warehouse". According to ExPro, natural gas for injection into Ukrainian UGS is imported by both Ukrainian and foreign companies, which became noticeably more active since the beginning of July.

Against the background of 84.5% filling of European gas storage facilities, foreign companies are considering Ukrainian storage facilities as an alternative for storing natural gas. Favorable tariffs for gas storage encourage European companies to use Ukrainian storage facilities. Nevertheless, the risks of a full-scale war, as well as the available capacities of European UGS, so far deter non-residents from more active use of Ukraine's UGS.

According to ExPro's forecasts, by mid-August, the fullness of European storage facilities may exceed 90%, which will be another incentive for the use of Ukrainian UGS.

In general, gas injection into Ukrainian storages increased in July, exceeding 50 mcm on some days, which became the highest level since September 2020. Since the beginning of the month, more than 1.2 bcm of natural gas have been injected into the storage facilities, of which 507 mcm are imported resources to the "customs warehouse".
