Natural gas import to Ukraine exceeded 21 mcm per day

Natural gas imports to Ukraine on October 26 increased to 21.3 mcm, which is the highest level since September 2021. This is evidenced by the operational data of GTS Operator of Ukraine LLC. Compared to the previous day, imports increased by 4%.

The growth of gas imports to Ukraine is due to several reasons, the most important of which is the collapse of natural gas spot prices in Europe, which made imports economically feasible.

Also, some foreign companies inject gas into the "customs warehouse" of the Ukrainian UGS. According to the acting director of Ukrtransgaz JSC Sergiy Pereloma, in the first 20 days of October, the volume of gas stored by non-residents in the "customs warehouse" increased more than 7 times.

In addition, Moldavian state company Energocom imports gas from Moldova to Ukrainian UGS. On October 20, the company announced the purchase of 10 mcm of gas at a price of €94.95/MWh for injection into Ukrainian UGS. This gas will be used in case of restriction or termination of Russian gas supplies by Gazprom.

Gas comes from four main directions: Poland, Hungary, Moldova, and Slovakia. In general, during the 26 days of October, Ukraine imported more than 195 mcm, 50% more than during the same period last year. Compared to 26 days in September, imports increased 12 times.

In October, Ukraine imported the most gas from Poland - 71.4 mcm (+1.5% compared to October last year), Slovakia - 59.2 mcm (-39%), Hungary - 37.1 mcm (-21%), and Moldova – 27.6 mcm.

The main part of the gas arrived via short-haul to the "customs warehouse" of the Ukrainian UGS - 131 mcm. Also, almost 52 mcm of gas went directly to the "customs warehouse". In addition, about 14 mcm of gas came to the Ukrainian GTS.

On the morning of October 27, the ex-head of GTSOUA, Sergiy Makogon, reported that the import of gas by foreign traders to Ukraine had increased to 25 mcm per day. At the same time, according to ExPro, imports are at the level of 20 mcm.
