Naftogaz discussed with the USA the possibility of additional financing for the purchase of gas

Oleksiy Chernyshov, Chairman of the Board of Naftogaz of Ukraine NJSC, held a meeting with Brian McCauley, Deputy Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs of the US Treasury Department. The parties talked about the possibility of financing Ukraine's purchase of the additional volume of gas necessary for the 2022-2023 heating season. This was reported by the Naftogaz press service.

"It is important to direct the share of the allocated US $500 million through the EBRD to the purchase of gas to ensure Ukraine's energy security and electricity, water and heat for Ukrainians in this heating season. This is in line with the main goal of this funding, defined by the US Treasury Department — to promptly respond to the crisis caused by Russia's military aggression, to ensure the energy needs of Ukrainians," Chernyshov said.

The head of Naftogaz also noted and thanked the US Administration's request to Congress to allocate an additional $1.1 billion to support Ukraine's energy sector in 2023: "Another source of funding for gas purchases could be a new aid package for Ukraine in 2023, proposed by the US Administration to Congress, in to which $1.1 billion is proposed to be directed to energy."

"We understand that the needs of the energy infrastructure grow with each new Russian attack on Ukraine. The US is in contact with the EBRD regarding the effective use of $500 million allocated by the United States through the bank's structure. Some of them are indeed intended for the purchase of energy resources," McCauley noted.
