Moldova adopted an important European integration law on energy

On June 26, the Moldovan Parliament adopted a historic law on electricity, aimed at harmonizing the country's legal framework with the Energy Community's Electricity Integration Package.

The law transposes key elements of the Electricity Integration Package, opens the door for full participation in the EU's single electricity markets. This was reported by the Energy Community Secretariat. Following the adoption of the law, ANRE (National Energy Regulatory Agency of Moldova) on June 29 decided to appoint OPEM as the Moldovan nominated electricity market operator (NEMO).

“Moldova's progress in transposing the Electricity Integration Package creates the conditions for full integration into the EU electricity market after a compliance check. This demonstrates Moldova’s determination to move forward with energy sector reform and its deep understanding of its importance for stimulating competition, attracting new investments and ensuring a secure energy future,” said Artur Lorkovsky, Director of the Energy Community Secretariat.

As part of its broader integration efforts, Moldova also approved a VAT reverse charge scheme for wholesale electricity and gas markets earlier this month. The measure, implemented with the support of the Energy Community Secretariat through the EU4Energy programme, removes tax barriers to cross-border trade and brings Moldova’s fiscal system more closely into line with EU norms – another important step towards full market integration.
