Large-scale power outages in Spain and Portugal

Large-scale power outages occurred in Spain and Portugal, Politico reported, citing the Spanish system operator.

Power outages were reported from Madrid to Lisbon. Spanish transmission system operator Red Eléctrica said protocols had been activated to “restore electricity supply in collaboration with other companies following a blackout that occurred in the system”.

“The causes are being investigated, all resources are being directed to remedy it,” the operator said.

Portuguese operator E-Redes also said the outage was caused by “a problem in the European electricity grid.” The TSO added that data collected after the blackout indicated that a voltage imbalance was the cause of the collapse.
