In December 2023, Ukraine imported a record amount of electricity for the year

In December 2023, Ukraine imported 232,950 MWh of electricity, which is almost 4 times more than the volume of November and became a record for the year. This is evidenced by ExPro calculations.

Electricity was exported only on December 31 - 210 MWh was supplied to Moldova. The only exporter was the state company "Ukrhydroenergo". Electricity imports increased the most at the end of the month, during the Christmas holidays. Lower prices on neighboring European markets stimulated the growth of electricity imports. From December 22, deliveries took place almost at all hours of the day.

Compared to December 2022, imports increased 75 times. For the whole of 2023, the largest import of electricity came from Slovakia, 69%. And Ukraine exported the most to Moldova and Slovakia - 40% of the total export of electricity.

In December, electricity imports from Slovakia took a share of 43.8%, from Romania - 35.3%, from Moldova - 3.4%, from Poland - 17.6%. In particular, the import of electricity from Poland through the Khmelnytska NPP-Rzeszów line has increased significantly and has been happening since December 23.

The import peak was on December 26 - more than 19,000 MWh were supplied per day, which is a record for the whole of 2023.

In total, for the whole of 2023, the volume of imports amounted to 806.4 thousand MWh, exports - 366 thousand MWh.

The number of companies planning to import began to grow at the end of the month, and competition increased at the daily auctions for the allocation of capacity at interstate crossings. We would like to remind you that on January 16, a joint auction will be held at JAO for the Ukraine-Poland route (with a delivery date of January 18).

A detailed overview of foreign trade for December and the whole of 2023 will be published in the next issue of ExPro Electricity Monthly.
