Gas production in Russia fell by 11.3% in February to 57.2 bcm

Natural gas production in Russia in February 2025 fell by 11.3% compared to last year, to 57.2 bcm, Kommersant reports, citing statistics from the Ministry of Energy. The data also includes natural gas that was flared.

Production decline

In January, production volumes decreased by 3% compared to January last year. According to the results of two months of 2025, gas production in Russia amounted to 131 bcm, 7.3% less than in 2024.

Both Russia's largest state-owned energy company, Gazprom, and independent producers such as Novatek, Lukoil, and Rosneft are reducing natural gas production.

Reasons for the decline in production in Russia

One of the reasons for the decline in gas production in Russia is the termination of the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine to Europe on January 1, 2025. Russia used to transport about 15 bcm of natural gas per year to Europe via this route.

According to Kommersant, Gazprom currently has only one pipeline route to Europe, the Turkish Stream. Its capacity is just under 16 bcm per year.

They mention a decrease in demand amid abnormally warm weather, among other reasons. A reduction in demand in energy-intensive industries may also be beginning to affect gas consumption.
