Energoatom to load Westinghouse fuel for the first time in RNPP Unit №3

This year, for the first time, the NNEGC Energoatom will load nuclear fuel from the American company Westinghouse into Unit №3 (WWER - 1000, 1 GW) at the Rivne NPP, which will be the 7th WWER - 1000 working on Westinghouse’s fuel.

That was announced on April 13, 2021, by Petro Kotin, Acting President of the NNEGC Energoatom.

“As for the 13 units of WWER-1000 type deployed at our NPPs, 6 of WWER-1000 have been loaded with Westinghouse fuel, with 7 units of WWER-1000 type working on the TVEL fuel. This year, we are adding one power unit [for running on American nuclear fuel - Ed.], Namely - Unit №3 of the Rivne NPP, which will also receive fuel from Westinghouse, so we will already have 7 power units operating on nuclear fuel made by Westinghouse," Kotin said.

At the same time, 2 WWER-440 energy units at the Rivne NPP are currently running on fuel from the Russian company TVEL.

Kotin also reminded that under the program of nuclear energy development there is a strategy of fuel diversification is envisaged, i.e. the share of one supplier in nuclear fuel supply should be within 40%-60%.
