Energoatom is preparing documentary base for cooperation with the US on the construction of the AP 1000 unit

The NNEGC Energoatom has prepared a draft intergovernmental agreement between the governments of Ukraine and the United States, and is working on the development of a feasibility study for the construction of a nuclear power unit in Ukraine using the technology of the American company Westinghouse (AR 1000) and with funding from the US Export-Import Bank (Eximbank).

This was announced on October 18 by President of the company Petro Kotin.

Kotin also added that today the company has prepared a draft intergovernmental agreement for cooperation between the US and Ukrainian governments in this project.

"An intergovernmental agreement has been prepared. It talks about guarantees (state guarantees from Ukraine - ed.)… As for the the type of the AR 1000 reactor and about financing and US government support. This agreement will help us to actually have a document that will be a road map on which we will move forward," he said, adding that the Parliament of Ukraine would also need to adopt a law, as well as approval from neighboring countries.

The head of the NNEGC Energoatom noted that Westinghouse offers the technology of the AR 1000 power unit in a modular design, such modules are built in 2.5 years.

"The amount of funding is always indicative. Estimated $5 billion is the average price of such a NPP unit, it can be $4 billion dollars, it can be $6 billion, depending on what conditions and from what sources you will receive financing of this power unit and also on what part you produce in Ukraine, " he said, adding that today Energoatom agrees with Westinghouse on the distribution of equipment that will be manufactured in the United States and which - in Ukraine.

He also noted that the AP 1000 technology is already licensed by the U.S. regulator.
