DTEK Will Focus on Green Hydrogen Production

Energy holding DTEK will focus on the production of hydrogen using renewable energy (so called “green” hydrogen), in spite of the hydrogen manufacturing from gas or coal remains cheaper, Mr. Emanuele Volpe, the Director of Innovation DTEK stated about it during the interview for ExPro agency.

“The production of hydrogen from coal or gas is more economically reasonable than the electrolysis using renewable energy. DTEK takes care of environment that’s why the company is focusing on green hydrogen production,” he said.

According to Volpe, there are 2 types of hydrogen production from renewable energy:

  • purpose-built facilities i. e. using all generated electricity to supply electrolysis cell and hydrogen production;
  • hydrogen manufacturing due to electricity limited to be outputted in the grid.

“The second way takes place when TSO limits your facility, thus you can use the electricity for hydrogen synthesis. But this approach is the least economically reasonable under the current terms,” explained the Director of Innovation DTEK.

In addition, Mr. Volpe noted the profitable model of hydrogen production using renewables is under design.

“All the story about hydrogen was created for one reason. It is decarbonization. It is not important is this technology is profitable or not… There are no prepared scenarios how you should do or not in the case of hydrogen. At now, everybody is trying out and learning, including Ukraine,” he added.
