Czech ČEZ is suing Russia's Gazprom for undersupply of gas in 2022

On February 8, 2023, the Czech company ČEZ officially initiated arbitration proceedings against Gazprom Export LLC, submitting a request for arbitration under the rules of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). This is reported on the ČEZ website.

ČEZ is demanding compensation for damages in the amount of about 1 billion Czech crowns ($45 million) resulting from a significant undersupply of natural gas to Gazprom in 2022. The arbitration shall take place in Geneva and shall be settled by a three-member arbitral tribunal.

As reported by ExPro, the German RWE and Uniper have already applied to international arbitration with similar claims regarding undersupply of gas to Gazprom. Moldova was also preparing a lawsuit against Gazprom's decision to cut gas supplies to the country. In November 2022, the Stockholm arbitration found Gazprom's demands to pay for gas in rubles illegal, following a lawsuit from Finland's Gasum.

In September 2022, Naftogaz also officially started a new arbitration against Gazprom for incomplete payment for Russian gas transit services through Ukraine.
