Ukraine starts exporting biomethane

On February 7, the first Ukrainian company exported 67.5 tcm of biomethane stored in Ukrainian underground gas storage facilities (UGS), the Energy Customs and the Ukrainian Gas Transmission System Operator reported.

According to Energoreforma, the first biomethane was exported by the Vitagro agricultural holding. ExPro data shows that the export was carried out via pipelines to Slovakia.

The customs noted that the work for this purpose had been carried out for two years with the participation of MPs, representatives of the Ministry of Finance, the State Customs Service of Ukraine, the Energy Customs, operators of the Ukrainian gas transmission system and gas storage facilities, the expert community, civil society and biomethane producers to amend the legislation of Ukraine, which regulated the issue of biomethane exports.

As a reminder, the export of Ukrainian natural gas remains banned following Russia's full-scale invasion.

Who can export biomethane?

As of January 2025, three companies are already producing biomethane: Vitagro with a plant in the Khmelnytskyi region, Gals Agro in the Chernihiv region, and MHP's Oril-Leader in the Dnipro region. As of the end of January 2025, biomethane producers had accumulated 1.5 mcm of biomethane in storage.
