Norway allocates nearly $100 million to Naftogaz for natural gas purchases
The Norwegian government has announced the allocation of 1 billion Norwegian kroner (over $98 million) to Naftogaz of Ukraine NJSC, ExPro reports, citing Norwegian channel VG. The funds will be used to purchase imported natural gas for the heating season.
The assistance will be provided as a grant through the Nansen Support Programme, designed to support Ukraine across various sectors. The programme was launched in February 2023.
Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide confirmed in an interview with VG that the decision was made following President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's request to help boost gas reserves ahead of winter.
In March 2025, Norway had already provided a similar grant to Naftogaz for the purchase of imported natural gas.
According to ExPro estimates, at current European natural gas prices (€31.5/MWh), the funds allocated by Norway could cover the purchase of about 250–260 mcm of natural gas for Naftogaz.
Recently, Naftogaz also secured a record €500 million loan from the EBRD to purchase natural gas for the winter.
