Naftogaz closes its branch in Turkmenistan

Naftogaz of Ukraine officially closed its branch in Turkmenistan on December 31, 2025, ExPro reports.

The Supervisory Board of Naftogaz decided to liquidate the branch in Turkmenistan back in March 2023. At the end of 2025, the company received a copy of the certificate confirming the removal of the branch from the Unified State Register of Legal Entities of Turkmenistan.

Naftogaz closed its branch in Turkmenistan as part of the optimization of its corporate structure.

Ukraine and Turkmenistan

Since the late 1990s, Turkmenistan has been the main supplier of natural gas to Ukraine. For example, the intergovernmental gas supply agreement for 1999 provided for deliveries of 20 bcm at $36/tcm at the Turkmenistan-Uzbekistan border. Supplies were carried out by Naftogaz of Ukraine.

However, after 2005, due to the deterioration of relations with russia, which controlled the transit of Turkmen gas, direct supplies began to be blocked. Ukraine finally lost the ability to purchase Turkmen gas as a state in 2009, when russia bought out almost all of Turkmenistan’s export resources, and direct contracts disappeared even formally.

At the same time, in 2011-2012, the private company Ostchem of Dmytro Firtash obtained the opportunity to import natural gas from Asia for the chemical industry. In total, the company imported about 4.8 bcm of gas per year, part of which came from Turkmenistan via russia’s Gazprom.
