Ukraine offers assistance to Moldova with EU natural gas imports
Due to the delayed construction of Romania-Moldova gas transmission pipeline interconnector, Ukrtransgaz has sent their proposals to the Moldovan government to strengthen positions of the latter in a new contract negotiations with Gazprom. Ukraine has offered to Moldova to use the capacities of the Ukrainian gas transmission system, thus helping Moldova to mitigate the potential risk of possible disruption in natural gas transit from the Russian Federation and safeguard the security of gas supply to Moldovan consumers.
Besides, Ukrtransgaz is ready to offer Moldova its underground gas storages for Moldova to accumulate its own gas volumes to ensure uninterrupted gas supply in winter 2019/2020. The capacity of the Moldova-Ukraine interconnectors allows transport of up to 15 million cubic meters of gas per day, which fully covers the needs of consumers in Moldova.
The formal offer was sent to the Moldovan side in the spring of this year. The make this happen, the Moldovan and the Ukrainian GTS operators need to sign bilateral agreements abiding EU rules on cooperation for exit/entry GTS points. between the GTS of Ukraine and Moldova under European rules. That aside, Moldovan traders need to sign contracts for gas transmission and storage with Ukrtransgaz.
As released to ExPro, the Ukrainian side proposed EU to store an additional 3-4 billion cubic meter natural to guarantee the security of natural gas supply to Eastern- European countries receiving natural gas mainly from the Russian Federation.
