Gas generation is needed to balance the energy system before switching to CO2-free technology - Siemens Energy

Modern gas-fired fast start geneators (peak and semi-peak) today is best suited for balancing the energy system of Ukraine due to high efficiency, environmental friendliness, availability of gas resources; this technology must take its place in the energy balance before the introduction of carbon-free generation working on hydrogen.

This opinion was expressed on April 22, 2021, in a comment to ExPro by Oleksiy Balaba, Head of the Electricity Production, Digital Technologies and Services Department of Siemens Energy LLC.

"From an economic, environmental, and technical point of view, I saw primarily the gas generation as a transitional technology to meet the needs of balancing Ukraine's energy system, covering evening peaks, passing district heating season with the energy mix available at current stage of development of Ukraine," he said.

According to Balaba, today it is too early to talk about hydrogen technologies as a commercial solution for the energy market.

"It is too early to talk about hydrogen for this purpose. Gas generation, both peak and semi-peak generation (including shunting CHPs) will be able to solve the problem of balancing the energy system in Ukraine, and only then will become the basis for the formation of hydrogen energy in future, " added Balaba.

He also noted that the work of gas generation would ensure the work of the gas transmission system of Ukraine, which is a very important issue today.

ODESA OFFSHORE CONFERENCE-2019 Ukraine has every chance to resume the work of the most promising oil and gas region, the Southern oil&gas fields. The untapped deposits of oil and gas are located both onshore and subsea. Four companies have already poised to conclude Production Sharing Agreements with Ukraine, whilst bidding for the Dolphin oil&gas fields on Black Sea shelf. The Odesa Offshore Conference (OOC2019) will serve as a venue for Ukrainian and international bidders to meet with local and international drilling, oilfield service and equipment manufacturers to kick-off emerging subsea and onshore projects in Ukraine.
