Energoatom for the first time received a license for the commercial exploitation of Westinghouse`s fuel
NNEGC Energoatom for the first time received a license for the commercial exploitation of Westinghouse`s nuclear fuel. This license was issued for the fuel used at the third nuclear unit of South-Ukraine NPP. This information was reported on December 28 by the press service of Energoatom.
«We managed to complete the licensing process and move from the experimental-industrial exploitation to commercial exploitation of Westinghouse`s fuel», - said Executive Director for Nuclear and Radiation Safety and Scientific and Technical Support for Energoatom Natalia Shumkova.
She added that the joint work of American, Swedish and Ukrainian partners, as well as the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine and the State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety, played an important role in the licensing process.
As ExPro reported, the third nuclear unit of South-Ukraine NPP was the first power unit in Ukraine operated exclusively with Westinghouse`s fuel since July 2018.
Reference ExPro: Energoatom is the only company in the world that managed to diversify nuclear fuel shipments for Soviet-type reactors such as the WWER-1000 type. Nowadays, Westinghouse`s nuclear fuel is in operation in the reactor cores of six power units: unit №2 South-Ukraine NPP; unit №3 South-Ukraine NPP; unit №1 Zaporizhzhya NPP; unit №3 Zaporizhzhya NPP; unit №4 Zaporizhzhya NPP and unit №5 Zaporizhzhya NPP.
